Formerly known as the Sandalwood Island, Sumba is now famous for its horses and an excellent style of ikat cloth. Spirit, both ancestral and natural are worshiped. Although some exist in East Sumba, it is in West Sumba that there are a number of enormous megalithic tombs and traditional thatched and peaked huts raised on stilts.

It is here where incredible rituals take place, such as "Pasola" where hundreds of horsemen fling spears at each other in of uninhabited white- sand beaches fringed with thousand of coconut palms, volcanoes, waterfalls, deserted tropical islands and the friendliest people in the worlds which are all judged as the best. Sumba textiles are distinguished by their complexity combining ikat and supplemental decoration like shells and beads and beauty of their human, animal and supernatural motifs. Sumbanese women are prolitic weavers, and produce their valued textiles not just for local use but also for an export market that has existed since at least the early part of this century
